Instructions:
1. Prepare the Hamburger Steak:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, diced onion, diced green bell pepper, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them into oval patties, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the hamburger steaks to the skillet.
Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
2. Make the Gravy:
In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Sprinkle the flour over the melted butter and whisk continuously to create a roux.
Cook the roux for 1-2 minutes, or until it turns golden brown.
Gradually pour in the beef broth while whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
Cook the gravy, stirring occasionally, until it thickens to your desired consistency, about 5-7 minutes.
Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
3. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes:
Place the diced potatoes in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt.
Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer the potatoes until they are fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.
Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the butter and milk or cream.
Mash the potatoes with a potato masher until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
4. Serve:
To serve, place a hamburger steak on each plate and spoon gravy over the top.
Serve the mashed potatoes alongside the hamburger steak and gravy.
Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired.
Enjoy this delicious family soul food style hamburger steak with gravy and mashed potatoes as a comforting and satisfying meal!
