“WC” stands for Water Closet

The term comes from 19th-century Britain, when indoor toilets that used running water were introduced.

Water = refers to the flushing system

Closet = a small enclosed room

So originally, it meant a small room with a flushing toilet.

Today, “WC” is commonly used on public restroom signs in many European countries, especially in United Kingdom, France, and Germany.
